AUGUST NEWS!Welcome! Late summer already (where’s it gone?!) and I have LOADS to report in this one so buckle up, break out the popcorn & enjoy the Lightning Moon newsletter 💖TRANSITION UPDATE So much to tell you about here! As you all know, my surgery was unexpectedly cancelled due to the high risk of clots & haemorrhage from my particular blood cancer. Sadly, a haematologist refused to see me, which led to an impasse. However, after a bit of a blood accident outside my GP surgery in which I didn’t manage to stop bleeding after a blood test, I found myself suddenly called in for tests 🎉🎉🎉 Cue a bit of a wait, followed by a veritable bouquet of vials 🩸 Tests usually only take a day or two to get results, but these are weirder tests so I have to wait. I SHOULD have them by first week of September and they SHOULD clear up whether there’s anything the surgeon would need to know or anything I would need to do to stay safer. So for now, I’m in limbo, still waiting to see whether I can have the surgery and begin moving into my body. Coincidentally my upcoming book is about limbo, but I’ll get onto that in a minute lol. I’ve now been on testosterone nearly 9 months and am in a bit of a frustrated zone lots of guys find themselves in, of feeling like things aren’t happening quickly enough. On the other hand, it IS slowly happening. Bless thigh fur. Also beginning to get a bit more on my belly, neck and forearms. I’m fair-skinned though so most of it’s blond & not that visible (🙄😆). Less good is it looks like there will be increasing difficulties in England due to government policies & healthcare changes on the back of intensive anti-trans lobbying (they don’t call the UK ‘TERF Island’ for nothing). This even includes attempts to ban private trans healthcare. This is obviously really worrying for anyone who’s transitioning and a portion of my time & energy is now spent campaigning. HAZEL MOON/LIGHTNING MOON: Life force is key!In Western Europe, August is the month with most lightning strikes (US is July-Aug, south of the equator’s Nov-Jan) hence its dramatic name. The ‘Hazel Moon’, when cobs appear on hazel trees, sounds less dramatic - until you learn it was named Coll by the Celts, translating as "the life force inside you"! Hazelnuts are associated with wisdom, protection & poetic inspiration. A famed tale tells of nine hazel trees that grew around a sacred pool, feeding the salmon in it. The number of spots on a salmon shows how many nuts (how much wisdom) the fish has consumed. The bard Taliesin (who might have part-inpired my name) was born of magical life force from a swallowed seed. As a baby, he was thrown into the sea by Ceridwen, and found in a salmon weir by the hitherto-unlucky Elphin. Taliesin’s poetry repaid the old man many times over! The hazel is monoecious, meaning it has characteristics of both male and female. The male catkins are yellow and the female flowers are tiny red budlets. The English name ‘hazel’ is indeed less dramatic - from Anglo-Saxon haesel hat or cap, for the nuts’ leafy bonnets. |

He studied Illustration and Printmaking in Dundee and is now a freelance illustrator, portrait artist, and Make-up Artistry Lecturer.To me, there’s a hint of Tom of Finland about his work - though with more realism and maybe more sense of the men’s minds. Last month I finished with a classical one - that being Jules Dalou’s 1883 frieze ‘La Fraternité des Peuples’. This one is soooort of classical too lol.This is a statue-menhir at the Central Monument at Filitosa. There are lots of phallic menhirs around the world, and lots of ancient representations, but I love this one for its ‘thereness’. As well as the fact you can’t look at it without thinking ‘rock hard’ (or maybe that’s just me 😅).
